The Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) is dedicated to pursuing use-driven AI research, training an AI-ready workforce, and creating a platform to accelerate innovation to support the local economy. CAAI drives economic growth by fostering an ecosystem for innovation. It brings together computational infrastructure, AI expertise, diverse domain knowledge, industry and government partnerships, and workforce development programs to stimulate the emergence of new AI-powered businesses and startups. UL Lafayette plans to create a secure AI sandbox at the LITE Center to enable students, faculty, and local industry partners to experiment with open large language models like Meta’s Llama 3 locally. These local models mitigate security and privacy risks by ensuring that the data entered is not used to train public models.

Accessible Healthcare through AI-Augmented Decisions (AHeAD) Center

A Planned National Science Foundation Industry- University Cooperative Research Center

The Center brings together industry innovators and universities to harness the potential of AI to transform the R&D barriers and build AI-augmented decision support systems that deliver high-quality healthcare to every population. NSF AHeAD Center is a collaboration led by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, along with Tulane University, Georgia Tech, and the University of Florida.

The center will bring together industry leaders and innovators to harness the potential of AI to transform the healthcare profession by reducing costs, improving the quality of care, and making health information accessible to all populations. Despite advances in foundational models, significant trustworthiness, privacy, and variable gaps remain.

This is especially problematic for clinicians and patients who directly use AI tools in their profession. Addressing these fundamental challenges is critical for integrating AI into existing health 

systems. The center will focus on the “last mile” of R&D barriers that continue to stall the responsible deployment of AI technology into the health system. We will build trustworthy, privacy-preserving, and broadly accessible AI systems that work reliably from academic hospitals to rural clinics and home settings.

Every month, AHeAD hosts an AI4HealthOutcomes Seminar Series on the third Friday. You are invited to participate in the multi-institutional forum that brings together leading experts in artificial intelligence, public health, and medicine to advance evidence-based health innovation using AI.
